For anyone just beginning to follow Spanish women’s football, Liga F is the natural starting point. It is the country’s top division, bringing together 16 clubs for a season-long contest for the title, European qualification and survival.
Its official federation name is the Campeonato Nacional de Liga de Primera División de Fútbol Femenino. “Liga F Moeve” is the competition’s commercial name for the duration of its sponsorship agreement.
It is an official nationwide professional competition. Liga F organises it, working with the Royal Spanish Football Federation where required, and it is governed by its competition rules, the agreement between the two bodies and the remaining applicable federation regulations.
The Spanish Sports Council’s Executive Committee granted the top women’s division professional-league status on 15 June 2021. Primera Federación, the division immediately below it, remains a non-professional competition.
Which teams are in Liga F in 2026/27?
The 2026/27 season has 16 participants:
Athletic Club, Atlético de Madrid, FC Barcelona, Deportivo Abanca, Deportivo Alavés, DUX Logroño, SD Eibar, RCD Espanyol, FC Badalona Women, Granada CF, Madrid CFF, Real Madrid CF, Real Sociedad, Sevilla FC, Costa Adeje Tenerife and Valencia CF Femenino.
Deportivo Alavés and Valencia returned to the top flight after securing promotion during the previous season.
How many matches does each team play?
The 16 clubs face one another twice, once at home and once away. Each team therefore plays 30 matches and the full championship consists of 30 matchdays.
The points system is the usual one:
- Three points for a win.
- One point for a draw.
- No points for a defeat.
There is no title play-off. The team in first place after all 30 matchdays is crowned Liga F champion.
The 2026/27 season will begin on 30 August 2026 and finish on 23 May 2027. The calendar includes two midweek matchdays.
What happens when two teams finish level on points?
When two clubs finish the championship with the same number of points, their position is not decided immediately by overall goal difference.
The first criterion is the goal difference across the two head-to-head matches between those teams. If they remain level, the following criteria are applied in order:
- Overall goal difference across the full league season.
- The highest number of goals scored.
- The better position under the fair-play criteria.
- As a last resort, a match at a neutral ground.
Away goals do not carry any special value. Before looking at overall goal difference for the season, the two direct meetings must be taken into account.
When more than two teams are level, a separate table is first drawn up using only the matches played between them. The first criterion is the number of points obtained in that mini-table.
For the clubs that remain level, the next criteria are goal difference in those meetings, overall goal difference across the competition, goals scored and the fair-play criteria.
How many teams are relegated?
The teams finishing 15th and 16th are relegated to Primera Federación.
There is no relegation play-off and no tie between a Liga F club and a team from the division below. The bottom two go down automatically.
That makes survival a 30-matchday race. A team can stay up by a single point, by its head-to-head goal difference or by any of the subsequent criteria used to separate teams that finish level.
How does promotion to Liga F work?
Two clubs are promoted from Primera Federación.
In 2026/27, the division consists of 14 teams in a single group. They play one another home and away over 26 matchdays.
The team finishing first is declared champion. The automatic promotion place goes to the highest-ranked club that is eligible to move up to Liga F. Reserve or affiliated teams cannot be promoted when their senior side competes in the division immediately above; when one of them occupies a promotion position, the place passes to the next eligible club.
The next four eligible clubs contest a play-off for the second promotion place. They therefore do not necessarily have to be the teams finishing second to fifth in the overall table: ineligible reserve sides can move the cut-off further down the standings.
The semi-finals pair the highest-ranked of those four clubs with the fourth-ranked, and the second with the third. Both the semi-finals and the final are played over two legs. The first leg takes place at the ground of the lower-ranked team from the regular season and the return leg at the home of the higher-ranked side.
If a tie is level after the two matches, 30 minutes of extra time are played.
If the scores are still level at the end of extra time, the team that finished higher in the regular season advances. There is no penalty shoot-out.
Sporting promotion must also be accompanied by compliance with the economic, social, legal and administrative requirements for joining a professional competition.
How is a European place earned?
The final Liga F table is the reference used to allocate Spain’s places in the following season’s European competitions.
Those places go to the highest-ranked teams, but there is no permanent number that can safely be assumed. The number of representatives and the round in which each club enters depend on the access list approved by UEFA for every edition.
The 2026/27 Liga F table will determine the Spanish places in UEFA competitions in 2027/28. Once the access list for that season has been published, it will be possible to state exactly how many teams qualify and where each one enters.
Other circumstances provided for in UEFA regulations can also affect qualification, such as a Spanish club earning a place by winning a continental competition.
Since 2025/26, the Women’s Champions League has featured an 18-team league phase. The UEFA Women’s Europa Cup is the second-tier European women’s club competition. The precise route into both tournaments must be checked each season against the regulations and access list for the relevant edition.
Liga, the Copa de la Reina and the Supercopa are different competitions
Liga F is the test of consistency: 30 matchdays, three points for a win and a champion determined by the final standings.
The Copa de la Reina is a separate competition, organised by the RFEF and played in knockout rounds. Its results do not provide Liga F points and a cup defeat has no effect on the league table.
The Supercopa de España is also independent. Its format, participants and qualification criteria are established in the specific rules for each edition.
The same team can take part in all three competitions during a season, but each has its own calendar, format and trophy.
What is FVS and how is it different from VAR?
Liga F matches use Football Video Support, commonly known as FVS.
It is not the same as VAR. There is no team of video match officials automatically reviewing every major incident from a separate room.
Under FVS, the head coach —or, in their absence, the highest-ranking team official in the technical area— can ask the fourth official for the referee to review a specific incident on the pitchside monitor.
Requests are limited to possible clear errors or serious missed incidents involving four types of decision:
- Goal or no goal.
- Penalty or no penalty.
- Direct red card.
- Mistaken identity.
The request must be made immediately after the incident. The referee reviews the available footage and keeps the original decision unless there is clear evidence of an obvious error or a serious incident that had been missed.
FVS uses a smaller infrastructure than VAR and can operate with fewer cameras. That difference matters: the available pictures may not always provide a conclusive angle and, when they do not, the decision made on the pitch stands.
The 2026/27 rules expressly state that a match cannot be delayed or abandoned because the system stops working. If there is a technical failure, both teams must be informed and the game continues without the tool until it becomes available again.
How many substitutions can be made?
Each team can use a maximum of five substitutes during the match, making those changes in no more than three of its own stoppages. Substitutions made at half-time do not use one of those three opportunities.
A substituted player cannot return to the pitch and a player who has been sent off cannot be replaced.
There is also an additional permanent concussion substitution. It can be made when a concussion occurs or is suspected, including after a player has returned to the match following an initial assessment.
When one team uses that substitution, its opponent automatically receives the option of making one additional change and is given one extra substitution opportunity. A concussion substitution does not count among the five ordinary changes.
How many players can a club register?
Clubs can register a maximum of 25 first-team licences.
The rules allow a first-team squad to include up to five non-EU foreign players. Agreements signed by Spain or the European Union with third countries must be taken into account when applying that limit.
Each club must also register at least six players classed as “club-trained” or “association-trained” under the competition’s formation criteria.
To meet the club-trained condition, a player must have been registered between the ages of 15 and 21, inclusive, for at least three full seasons or 36 months in the youth ranks of the same club.
She can also meet the broader association-trained condition by having been registered for at least five full seasons or 60 months with any other Spanish club during the same age period.
Players belonging to reserve or affiliated teams may take part when they meet the relevant federation conditions. Once a match has begun, a team cannot have more than four players on the pitch who are not registered as part of the squad for that division.
When does the transfer window open?
The 2026/27 season has two ordinary registration periods for new Liga F licences.
The summer transfer window runs from 1 July until 23:59 on 18 September 2026. The winter window opens on 2 January and closes at 23:59 on 2 February 2027.
A club publicly announcing a signing does not, by itself, mean that the player is already eligible to compete.
Registration is first processed through Liga F, which grants prior approval and a provisional licence when its requirements have been met. The federation procedure must then be completed before the definitive licence is issued.
Who sets the kick-off times?
Liga F determines the date and time of each fixture within the windows established by the competition rules.
Weekend-matchday fixtures can kick off on Saturdays and Sundays between 12:00 and 21:01.
Different windows apply to midweek matchdays:
- On non-public holidays, between 19:00 and 21:01.
- On public holidays, between 14:00 and 21:01.
Liga F and the RFEF can adjust kick-off times because of temperatures or humidity conditions that could endanger participants. They can also extend the window to 22:01 when competition requirements create excessive fixture overlap.
Broadcasters and available channels may change during the season. To find out where a particular match is being shown, the safest option is to check the official schedule published for each matchday rather than assume that the same broadcast distribution will remain in place throughout the campaign.
A simple competition with many layers
Liga F’s central rule is easy to remember: 16 teams, 30 matchdays and a champion decided on points.
Beyond that, every season contains several different races. At the top, teams compete for the title and for Europe. At the bottom, they try to avoid one of the two relegation places.
Between those two areas, every point and every position can shape a club’s sporting plans, income and future objectives.
There is no need to know every squad or every regulatory detail from day one. Following the table, understanding what is at stake and allowing the 30 matchdays to do the rest is enough.
