Sevilla’s last visit to Riazor ended in a 4-0 victory. It was their second win over Deportivo that season, following a 3-1 result in the reverse fixture. Seven goals scored and only one conceded across the two meetings.
The sides meet again on Saturday, but Dépor have changed significantly since then. Alberto Rodríguez has replaced Fran Alonso as head coach, while the club have rebuilt the squad following 13 departures and the retirement of Cris Martínez.
The new-look team have shown promising signs in pre-season, recording three wins, one draw and a single defeat — a 2-1 loss to Real Madrid. They scored 14 goals and conceded three across five matches.
Sevilla have greater continuity. David Losada remains in charge of the side that finished eighth in Liga F last season and recorded another notable victory over Real Madrid this summer, winning 4-2. They also reached the Copa de Andalucía final.
Deportivo will begin the season without Marisa García and Ainoa Gómez, who are away with Spain ahead of the Under-20 World Cup.
The match at Riazor will offer the first indication of how much of the gap exposed by Sevilla last season remains — and how much the new Dépor have managed to close it.
