Jo Hye-Young has yet to play a single minute in a professional league.
She already has a World Cup behind her, the South Korea Under-20 armband and a place at another.
Madrid CFF have signed the 20-year-old forward for the 2026/27 season. The club has not disclosed the length of her contract.
Her move coincides with South Korea’s squad announcement for the Under-20 World Cup in Poland. Jo is one of the 21 players named and one of only three who also went to the tournament held in Colombia two years ago.
The calendar leaves very little room between her next two challenges. Liga F begins on 29 August and the World Cup on 5 September. South Korea play France on the 6th, then Ghana on the 9th and Ecuador on the 13th.
Before settling fully into her first professional job, Jo will be back captaining her country.
Two braces in six matches
The Korea University Sports Federation record lists Jo as a forward, a second-year student wearing number 77. It also gives her height as 1.62 metres.
Her 2026 figures contain one especially striking number: four goals in six matches.
They were not spread out. Jo scored twice against Ulsan College on 1 May and twice more against Daeduk University on 12 June. She did not score in her other four appearances.
Korea University reached the halfway point of the first women’s university league as leaders. They had 19 points from eight matchdays, with six wins, a draw and a defeat.
The domestic season ran alongside international call-ups. In April, Jo captained South Korea at the Under-20 Asian Cup. In June she was back in preparation for Poland.
The university record classifies her generically as a forward. Madrid CFF specify that she tends to play off a flank. Her four goals do not on their own explain how she plays, but they do show that her last semester in South Korea was not spent only creating chances for others.
From the bench in Colombia to the armband
Jo reached her first World Cup while still at Gwangyang Girls’ High School. She was 18 and one of three players born in 2006 included in the South Korea squad for Colombia 2024.
South Korea lost 1-0 to Nigeria, drew 0-0 with Venezuela and beat Germany 1-0. Those four points took them through as one of the best third-placed sides in the group stage.
The hosts ended their run in the last 16. Linda Caicedo scored the only goal of the match between Colombia and South Korea. Jo started on the bench and came on after it.
Two years later, her standing in the squad has changed.
The forward scored three goals in qualifying for the 2026 Under-20 Asian Cup. At the finals she captained the side and converted the penalty that made it 2-0 against Uzbekistan on the opening matchday.
She told the Asian Football Confederation afterwards that the armband had heightened her sense of responsibility. The new role, she said, shaped both her effort and the intent behind every action.
South Korea also won their second match, 2-1 against Jordan, and closed the group stage with a 5-0 defeat to North Korea.
In the quarter-finals they needed extra time to beat Thailand. The 2-1 sealed World Cup qualification before North Korea beat them again, this time 3-0 in the semi-finals.
Three survivors from 2024
Nam Seung-eun, Jeong Da-hee and Jo Hye-Young are the three members of the current squad who were also at the World Cup in Colombia.
For Jo, Poland will close a two-year stretch in which she has gone from representing her school to playing for Korea University, taking the Under-20 captaincy and signing for a Liga F club.
Madrid CFF host Granada on the opening matchday of the Spanish season. The World Cup begins a week later, so the start of her time in Madrid will depend on how far South Korea go.
Jo still has to show how her university numbers translate to Liga F.
When the chance comes, she will take it having played at more Under-20 World Cups than she has professional matches.
