Logroño United have a new head coach. Santiago García Olave will take charge of the Rioja side this season in Liga F, the club announced on Thursday. The 37-year-old, a native of Nájera, was presented on the same day.
The announcement adds that Daniel Montoya will stay on as assistant coach, “providing continuity and his knowledge of the club”.
Montoya took charge of the team for the first time on 31 January, after the club sacked Héctor Blanco, the coach who had taken it back to the top flight. Until then, Montoya had been in charge of the reserve side.
On 13 February the club brought in David Hernández to run the team alongside him. The pair went on to secure survival on 10 May.
David Hernández does not appear in Thursday’s announcement.
The club has not explained his departure. Its official X account has published no farewell, and the club has no website. On 30 July, only a week before García Olave was appointed, the team was still being described in the press as “the side managed by David Hernández”.
García Olave is the fourth coach to hold or share charge of the Logroño United bench so far in 2026.
With pre-season already under way
The change comes with pre-season already running. The team has been training for weeks and has played its first friendly, a 1-1 draw with Real Sociedad on 31 July.
Three more remain before the league begins: Athletic Club on 9 August, Cacereño on the 15th and Osasuna on the 22nd.
The competitive opener already has a date and a kick-off time: Real Sociedad v Logroño United, Saturday 29 August at 12:00 in Zubieta.
Twenty-three days separate the announcement of the new coach from that first match.
At his unveiling, García Olave spoke about the squad’s physical preparation and about controlling every phase of a game. He also set the objective of a more comfortable survival than last season’s.
Logroño United stayed up on that occasion after rebuilding their coaching staff during the second half of the campaign.
For the second time in less than six months, the club is bringing in a coach to lead the first team while Daniel Montoya remains on the staff.
