Sevilla will end their pre-season against one of the most transformed teams in European football this summer.
Only three days after losing the Copa Andalucía final to Granada, David Losada’s side will host the London City Lionesses of Alexia Putellas and Mapi León. The match takes place at Estadio Jesús Navas on Wednesday 19 August, with kick-off at 19:30 CEST.
It will be London City’s first game in Spain since signing the former Barcelona pair and Sevilla’s final test before the Liga F season begins.
Three days after the final
Sevilla go into the friendly with little time to recover from the Copa Andalucía. They reached the final by beating Málaga 6–0 but were unable to lift the trophy.
The deciding match against Granada ended 1–1 before the holders won the penalty shootout 4–3. It was the second successive final between the two clubs and the second won by Granada.
Losada described the defeat as a “slap in the face” that could benefit his team before the league campaign. London City will immediately raise the level of the opposition: their squad contains internationals from several countries and has been strengthened significantly ahead of the club’s second season in the Women’s Super League.
The game will also test Sevilla’s physical response after playing twice in the Copa Andalucía over five days.
Alexia and Mapi have already made their debuts
Alexia Putellas and Mapi León have already played their first minutes for London City during the English club’s pre-season camp in Portugal.
Eder Maestre’s team opened this stage of their preparations with a 3–1 victory over Benfica. Janni Thomsen, Freya Godfrey and Rosa Kafaji scored in a match in which Alexia and Mapi both featured for their new club.
Their second training game ended in a 1–1 draw with Sporting CP, with Daniëlle van de Donk scoring for London City. Sevilla will be their third opponent and the first they have faced on Spanish soil since the arrivals of Alexia and Mapi.
There will be other reunions too. María Pérez and Lucía Corrales are also part of the London City squad, having both spent loan spells at Sevilla in recent seasons.
The final test before Riazor
The friendly brings Sevilla’s preparation to an end. They will then have ten days before opening their Liga F season away to Deportivo Abanca at Riazor on Saturday 29 August at 12:00.
London City still have two more friendlies to play. They host Atlético Madrid at the CopperJax Community Stadium on Sunday 23 August before visiting OL Lyonnes in the Mastercard Cup on Saturday 29 August.
The two teams therefore arrive with different timelines. Sevilla are approaching their final rehearsal before competitive football begins, while London City are still integrating a reshaped squad with two further international tests to come.
The result will be secondary, but the match should offer a useful indication of how Sevilla respond against a side assembled with ambitions of climbing towards the top of English football.
