The leap from elite athletics to professional football is a crossing that very few sportspeople have managed to complete with resounding success. Pure straight-line speed, valuable though it is, tends to prove sterile in a team sport unless it is accompanied by a reading of space, technique in combination play and well-timed decision-making. Salma Paralluelo represents an exception to that rule: she has transformed her sprinter’s power into a refined and lethal penalty-box game.
Since taking the difficult decision to leave the athletics track for good and concentrate on the ball, the Aragonese attacker’s tactical development has undergone a dizzying evolution under the tutelage of FC Barcelona.
From the runaway flank to the central channel of goals
In her sporting beginnings at Zaragoza C.F.F. and Villarreal, Salma Paralluelo operated almost exclusively hugging the touchline as a left winger. Her game was based on pure depth: a long ball into space and a race won against any full-back thanks to her 400-metre runner’s stride. Her arrival in the Barcelona dressing room, however, changed her role completely.
The Barça coaches immediately identified her potential to play in more central positions. Little by little, Salma reshaped her position towards the centre-forward zone, or that of an attacker with licence to cut in on the diagonal. In this new role, her speed no longer serves to gain ground out wide, but to make lethal runs in behind the opposition centre-backs.
The refinement of her finishing and combination play
The aspect in which Paralluelo’s growth is most evident is her composure when finishing in front of the opposing goalkeeper. Where once her speed meant she arrived tired or hurried for the final touch, she now shows the poise of a veteran striker in the six-yard box. She has learned to read the timing of the offside line, to angle her runs so as to open her body onto her left foot, and to combine at first touch with the midfielders.
With senior World Cups and European trophies to her name, Salma Paralluelo has left behind the label of “an athlete who plays football” to establish herself as one of the most feared and intelligent centre-forwards on the international stage.
