The new Cacereño Femenino are being built around a major farewell and a familiar presence.
Tatiana Fernández has hung up her gloves after 19 seasons, 450 appearances and an entire career with the same club. Ernesto Sánchez, meanwhile, will take charge for a fourteenth season.
The team are entering a new era without parting with the coach who has overseen much of their recent history.
The rebuild has not been caused by relegation, but it follows a season that pushed Cacereño to the limit.
The Extremadura side went into the final round needing to beat Real Oviedo to guarantee survival. Carmen Acedo scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory at Pinilla, leaving the team ninth and just one point above the relegation zone.
Speaking to Canal Extremadura, Sánchez put the escape down to the team rediscovering its identity: “The key to staying up has been going back to our most basic DNA: defending, staying tight together, looking out for one another and everyone giving their best.”
Now he wants more.
In a message released by the club after his renewal, the coach said: “We are going for the best season in the history of Cacereño Femenino.” It is an ambitious statement for a project that was still fighting to remain in the division only a few months ago.
A new era in goal after Tati
The first change carries an inevitable symbolic weight.
Tati had been part of the team since its creation. She was its captain, one of its defining figures and one of the players who accompanied the club throughout its development into an established second-tier side.
Her retirement leaves a vacancy in goal, but also a presence that cannot be replaced by a single signing.
Carlota Alcalde arrives to begin a different era in a position where Delia Baz will also remain, starting her twelfth season at the club.
The succession reflects much of the thinking behind the new squad: bringing in fresh players without losing those who already understand the club.
Carmen Acedo, scorer of the goal that secured survival, will continue in midfield. Midori Yoshimura, Victoria Arévalo, Cora Jiménez, Sara Carrillo and Alejandra López will also stay, while Tsubaki Hayashi steps up to the first team.
Nine signings and one departure for Liga F
The rebuild extends well beyond the goalkeeping department.
Alongside Carlota Alcalde, Cacereño have signed Costa Rica international Sofía Varela; defenders Irune Cervera, Ana Fernández and Lucía Bonilla; and Marina Sánchez, Yanira Morán, Sara Suárez and Sara Caparroz.
Caparroz, born in 2007 and signed from Madrid CFF B, was announced as the ninth addition to a squad combining experience with young players who still have considerable room to develop.
The team have also lost one of their main attacking threats.
Yorladiz Díaz has joined Deportivo Alavés and will compete in Liga F after two seasons in Cáceres. Her departure leaves Cacereño needing to replace some of the speed, power and one-on-one threat provided by the Colombian forward.
The challenge is not simply to replace names.
Cacereño must transform a team that secured survival on the final day into one capable of competing with greater consistency. Sánchez’s continued presence preserves a recognisable identity, but nine new signings mean that many of the players responsible for carrying it out will have to adapt quickly.
Tati will no longer be in goal. Yorladiz will no longer be in attack.
The coach, however, is not talking about a transition.
He is talking about the best season in the club’s history.
