Algeria beat Kenya 0-2 in Rabat and qualified for the quarter-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
It is the second time they have managed it. The first was in the 2024 edition.
Marine Dafeur scored in the 14th minute and Lynda Bendris in the 23rd. Both goals came from Kenyan mistakes: the data provider logged two “errors leading to goal” against Kenya and none against Algeria.
There were no more goals in seventy minutes.
Kenya had nineteen touches in the Algerian box. Algeria had ten in the Kenyan one.
Kenya had thirteen attempts to fourteen. The difference was accuracy: two shots on target to eight.
Kenya were the better side after the interval. They had 51% of the ball, had eight attempts to three and generated 0.41 expected goals to 0.16. They did not score.
They have not scored at all in this tournament. They lost 0-4 to Morocco, 0-1 to Senegal and 0-2 here, and leave Morocco with seven goals against and none for.
Kenya have never won a match at a Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. They have never drawn one either. They have now played six and lost all six, counting their only previous appearance in 2016.
The Harambee Starlets finished with four yellow cards. Algeria finished with none.
Algeria arrived at this edition with three wins in nineteen matches at the finals — CAF keep that count — and leave the group stage with two more: this one and their opening win over Senegal.
Their first half-hour cost them two players. Captain Sofia Guellati went off injured in the 7th minute and Inès Boutaleb followed in the 49th.
Algeria finish second in Group A on six points. Morocco win it on seven after a goalless draw with Senegal.
