Spain are one match away from returning to the UEFA Women’s Under-19 EURO final. David Aznar’s side face Sweden after coming through the group stage unbeaten, although not always with the same level of control.

The 2-2 draw against Switzerland in their opening match provided the first warning signs. Spain controlled much of the ball and created chances, but allowed their opponents to threaten whenever they were able to accelerate after winning it back. A 4-0 victory over Iceland and a 2-1 win against Austria followed, securing top spot in the group and keeping alive the possibility of a fifth consecutive title.
Sweden took a different route. They began with a 1-0 win over Poland in a match in which they were willing to spend long periods without possession, secured their semi-final place with a 5-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina and ended the group stage with a 2-0 defeat to Germany.
Those results also showed the adaptability of Briana Campos’s side. Against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sweden had to establish themselves in the opposition half and break down a deep defensive block. Against Poland and Germany, by contrast, they protected space and looked to move forward quickly after regaining possession.
That is where the main threat to Spain lies.
The Spanish side will try to control the match through possession and commit players forward around the Swedish penalty area. Sweden do not need to compete for the ball to feel comfortable in the game. Their opportunity may come from Spanish turnovers, particularly if they can find space behind the full-backs and release players such as Agnes Ekberg.
Ekberg scored the winner against Poland after driving forward from the right and was again one of Sweden’s main threats on the counterattack against Germany. Preventing her from receiving the ball with space to run into will be one of the most important tasks for Aznar’s side.
The head-to-head record clearly favours Spain. The two teams have met 13 times, with nine Spanish victories, one draw and three Swedish wins. Spain have also won each of the last five meetings.
However, the semi-final will not be decided by previous results. Spain will need to find the right balance between committing players to attack and protecting themselves when possession is lost. They will look to dominate the ball; Sweden will wait for the moment when space opens up.
The game kicks off at 16:00 at Training Centre FFBH in Zenica and will be shown on Teledeporte in Spain. The winner will face Germany or Austria in Friday’s final.
