Austria beat Switzerland 3-1 at the Grbavica Stadium in Sarajevo on Wednesday to secure their place in the semi-finals of the Women’s Under-19 European Championship.
Austria have six points from their opening two matches, having also beaten Iceland 3-0 on matchday one. Switzerland, who began the tournament with a draw against Spain, must wait for the other Group B result before knowing exactly what they will require in the final round.
Austria took the initiative from the opening stages and created the main chances of the first half. Alina Keckeis and Denise Lueger were involved in their early attacking moves, while Switzerland tried to contain their opponents and break forward after regaining possession.
Austria’s control was rewarded in the 41st minute. Sophie Pötzl supplied Katie Richter and the midfielder scored the opening goal, sending her side into half-time with a 1-0 lead.
Switzerland introduced Ramona Schallberger at the start of the second half, but Austria struck again before the change could alter the course of the match. Hannah Hoke found Valentina Illinger in the 59th minute and the forward doubled the advantage.
At 2-0 down, Switzerland pushed their lines higher and began reaching the Austrian penalty area more frequently. Schallberger became increasingly influential and, after two successive corners, set up Rahel Hinder to make it 2-1 in the 70th minute. Hinder had entered the match five minutes earlier.
The goal brought Switzerland back into the contest and produced a more even spell. Austria responded with several substitutions and protected their lead as the Swiss searched for an equaliser.
The decisive goal arrived in added time. Tina Krassnig carried an Austrian transition forward and assisted Greta Spinn, who completed the 3-1 victory in the 90th minute plus two.
Switzerland still had one final opportunity through Emilie Mece, but the score did not change again.
Austria complete the opening two rounds with six goals scored, one conceded and two victories. Their semi-final place is secure before they finish the group stage against Spain.
Switzerland remain on one point and will play Iceland in their final group match.
