Africa has now handed out its four direct places at the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
Only one belongs to the same nation as four years ago.
Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa and Zambia were the four representatives who reached Australia and New Zealand 2023 directly through the Africa Cup of Nations. In Brazil it will be Morocco, Algeria, Cameroon and Malawi.
Three of the four places have changed hands. Two of them will take a nation to the World Cup for the first time.
Africa’s four direct qualifiers
- Morocco: second World Cup, after debuting in 2023.
- Algeria: first qualification in their history.
- Cameroon: third World Cup, after playing in 2015 and 2019.
- Malawi: first qualification in their history.
All four secured their tickets by reaching the semi-finals of the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations. Morocco beat South Africa 2-1; Algeria won away against Ivory Coast (1-2); Cameroon eliminated Nigeria 1-0 and Malawi got past Ghana 2-1.
The semi-finals will now decide the continental title, but they will no longer alter the four direct places for Brazil.
Morocco string two World Cups together
Morocco are the only survivor from the African group that played the last World Cup.
The Atlas Lionesses debuted in 2023 with a 6-0 defeat to Germany, but responded with consecutive wins over South Korea and Colombia. Those six points took them to the round of 16, where France ended their run.
Victory over South Africa in the quarter-finals guarantees a second consecutive appearance. It also keeps alive their pursuit of a third straight continental final after losing the previous two to South Africa and Nigeria.
Algeria turn two steps forward into a World Cup debut
Algeria had never gone beyond the group stage of the Africa Cup of Nations until the previous edition.
In 2025 they reached the quarter-finals for the first time and went out to Ghana on penalties after a goalless draw. A year later, they returned to the same round and took the step that was missing: victory over Ivory Coast secured their first semi-final and their first World Cup.
The Algerians will be the second North African nation to play the tournament, after Morocco.
Cameroon return after missing 2023
Cameroon already knew the World Cup, but had gone eight years without qualifying.
The Indomitable Lionesses reached the round of 16 both on their 2015 debut and at France 2019. They missed 2023 after losing to Portugal in the intercontinental play-off.
This time they will not need that route. Myriam Maéva Nyadjou’s direct free kick in the 20th minute was enough to beat Nigeria and take the ticket. Cameroon will return directly to the World Cup and face Morocco on Wednesday in their first continental semi-final since 2018.
Malawi go from continental debut to the World Cup
Malawi had never played an Africa Cup of Nations before this summer.
Their first match ended in an away win over Nigeria, the reigning champions (2-3). They then beat Egypt and, despite losing to Zambia, finished top of Group C in a three-way tie on six points.
The 2-1 win over Ghana extended a journey that did not exist less than a year ago: Malawi qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in October 2025 and will now debut at the World Cup too.
Algeria and Malawi will raise to ten the number of different African nations to have played at least one edition. Up to 2023 the list read Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, South Africa, Equatorial Guinea, Ivory Coast, Morocco and Zambia.
Ghana and South Africa are still alive through the other route
The four direct places are taken, but Africa can still send up to six nations to Brazil.
The four teams beaten in the quarter-finals played two additional ties on 13 August. South Africa beat Nigeria 2-1 and Ghana took the other tie against Ivory Coast (1-2). The two winners took the African places at the FIFA Play-Off Tournament.
Reaching that tournament is not the same as qualifying for the World Cup. The intercontinental play-off will gather ten nations from the six confederations and hand out the last three tickets to Brazil 2027.
Zambia went out after failing to get through the group stage, and on 13 August Ivory Coast and Nigeria followed them. Nigeria, ten-time African champions and the reigning continental holders, will miss a World Cup for the first time in their history.
That is why, even though the definitive African list can still grow, the handover on the direct route is already complete.
Of the four nations who went straight to the 2023 World Cup, only Morocco have done it again.
