That result leaves Switzerland with more than just pride today. Win against Austria, and the group leaders become someone else’s problem. Lose, and they head into the final round needing to beat Spain just to keep semi-final hopes alive. Austria, meanwhile, only need to avoid defeat to reach the decisive matchday in the strongest possible position in the group.

The head-to-head record clearly favours Switzerland: three wins to none for Austria, one draw, and an aggregate score of 8-1. These are youth-level numbers, shaped by constant generational turnover, so they carry less weight than they might appear to. But it’s the kind of stat a coaching staff still likes to have on its side before a match like this.
What matters more is the form each side brings into today. Austria, managed by Markus Hackl, are expected to keep largely the same XI that won so comfortably on matchday one, with Illinger as captain.
