The opening round of Group A left little room for interpretation. Germany dismantled the hosts 0-5; Sweden ground out a 1-0 win over Poland without breaking sweat. On Tuesday, the two sides at the bottom of the table meet with very different things at stake. Bosnia need a win to stay alive. Sweden could all but book their semi-final place before the final matchday.
Bosnia: the hosts with their backs to the wall
The opening day was brutal. Germany were too strong, too organised, too much of everything — though Bosnia did have their moment before the game slipped away: Sara Mujdžić met a cross with a firm header that clipped the crossbar in the first half, a reminder that the hosts are not simply making up the numbers. They were, however, outclassed once Germany got going, and the 0-5 scoreline did not flatter the visitors.
What changes on Tuesday is the dynamic. Against Sweden, Bosnia will be forced to come forward, which may actually suit them better than sitting back. Their recent form — four wins and a draw in their last five before the tournament — shows a team capable of competing. The crowd at Bilino Polje will be behind them. Whether that is enough is another question.
The head-to-head record between these two sides is not encouraging: Sweden have won one and drawn one of their previous meetings, scoring seven goals to Bosnia’s three.
Sweden: functional, effective, clinical
Sweden were not pretty against Poland. They spent long stretches without the ball, allowed their opponents to build from the back, and retreated into shape without panic. Then, in the 83rd minute, half-time substitute Agnes Ekberg burst down the right flank, her shot deflecting off Iga Witkowska into her own net. Job done. Sweden had barely broken a sweat.
That capacity to absorb pressure and punish on the counter is precisely what makes them dangerous against a Bosnia side that cannot afford to sit back. Ekberg will be one to watch again, alongside Filippa Sjöström in attack and the engine room of Ella Lundin and Augusta Priks in midfield. Their recent form (one loss, three wins and a draw in their last five) points to a team that does not always control matches but rarely loses them either.
What is at stake
A Sweden win would put them in a commanding position to reach the semi-finals, depending on the result of Poland vs Germany later the same evening (20:00 CET). For Bosnia, the equation is simple: win, or face an almost impossible task on the final matchday.
