Austria started the Women’s Under-19 Euro with a 3-0 victory against Iceland, placing them at the top of Group B after the opening matchday.

Iceland started the match better, managing to threaten the Austrian box through set pieces. The Icelandic side forced four corners in the first 19 minutes, though they failed to turn their territorial dominance into clear-cut chances.

Austria, by contrast, made their first major opportunity count. Denise Lueger opened the scoring in the 28th minute following an assist from Katie Richter, turning the tide of a match that had featured few openings up to that point.

Iceland tried to respond before the break, putting together three blocked shots in a single sequence in the 43rd minute. However, it was Austria who struck again. Maja Keckeis delivered a corner in the second minute of first-half stoppage time, and Ronja Leidler finished to make it 2-0.

The side managed by Markus Hackl asserted greater control after the restart. Lueger forced a save from Herdís Halla Guðbjartsdóttir in the 49th minute, and Austria accumulated further arrivals through Valentina Pötzl, Katie Richter, and Keckeis.

The clearest chance came in the 67th minute, when Guðbjartsdóttir denied Pötzl to prevent a third. Iceland tried to stay in the match with substitutions, finding joy through Ingibjörg Magnúsdóttir, but again lacked precision in the final third.

With Iceland pushing forward in stoppage time, Austria put the game to bed. Teresa Frizberg won the ball back and assisted Tina Krassnig, who scored the 3-0 goal in the 93rd minute—just ten minutes after coming off the bench.

Iceland still had two chances in the dying moments, but Magnúsdóttir was denied by the goalkeeper and Arnfríður Auður Arnarsdóttir fired wide.

The victory leaves Austria top of Group B with three points, ahead of Spain and Switzerland, who drew 2-2 in the day’s opening fixture. Iceland will be the next opponents for the Spanish national team.
