Poland and Germany drew 1-1 in Sarajevo on matchday two of Group A at the Women’s Under-19 European Championship. Oliwia Związek gave Poland the lead in the 33rd minute before Tessa Zimmermann equalised in the 57th in a match played in heavy rain.
Poland made the brighter start and created the first two chances. Lena Świrska tested Janne Krumme in the second minute before Weronika Araśniewicz forced the German goalkeeper into another save three minutes later.
Germany gradually grew into the contest and began to threaten the Polish penalty area. Emma Memminger saw a shot blocked, while Laila Portella, Luisa Sträßer and Helen Börner also tried their luck during an open first half.
Poland were the side to make the breakthrough. In the 33rd minute, Świrska delivered into the area and Oliwia Związek rose to head home the opening goal.
Germany nearly responded in the 40th minute when Zimmermann struck the post directly from a corner. Poland also had the chance to double their lead before the break, but Krumme denied Emilia Sobierajska.
The game remained lively after the restart. Marie Gmeineder had the first opportunity of the second half before Zimmermann tested the Polish goalkeeper in the 52nd minute. Poland replied immediately through efforts from Araśniewicz, Związek and Maja Zielińska.
The equaliser arrived in the 57th minute. Zimmermann found space near the edge of the area and placed her shot beyond the Polish goalkeeper to make it 1-1.
Both teams pushed for a winner during the final half-hour. Paula Rintzner tested the goalkeeper for Germany, while Poland responded through Araśniewicz and Kinga Wyrwas. Krystyna Flis forced Krumme into another save with a free-kick in the 76th minute.
The match remained open into the closing stages. Poland continued to threaten from set pieces, while Germany also created openings through Annabel Müller and Leonie Köpp, but neither side managed to find a decisive goal.
The result leaves Germany on four points with qualification for the semi-finals still in their own hands. They will progress if they avoid defeat against Sweden in their final group match and will also advance if Poland fail to beat Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Poland must defeat the hosts and hope Germany lose. In that case, second place in the group would be decided by the competition’s tie-breaking criteria. Sweden, on six points, have already qualified for the semi-finals.
